Lansdowne is a beautiful town, a cantonment area of Garhwal rifles and a quiet hill-station located at the Pauri district of Uttarakhand about 45 kms away from Kotdwar. The beautiful town of Lansdowne is situated at 1790 meters above the sea-level surrounded by thick oak and blue pine tree forests and offers a mesmerizing view of the surrounding mountains.
Lansdowne is one of the best weekend destinations of Uttarakhand and is completely deprived of the usual commotion of the other hill stations in Uttarakhand. Lansdowne was founded and named after then Viceroy of India Lord Lansdowne in 1887. Nowadays the famous Garhwal Rifles has their command office here.
Lansdowne is perfect for a getaway from the hustle-bustle of daily life in every sense, being a beautiful and charming hill station, it still is the quietest, less crowded, not over developed. Well maintained and much cleaner because of the cant area. The architecture is brilliant with all the British colonial buildings. It is pretty much undiscovered thus perfect for a go-getter adventure enthusiast for exploration.
Lansdowne faces comparatively pleasant summers and cold winters. Summers from March to July are pretty enjoyable here but the winters are extremely cold with temperature sliding below subzero level. One can experience an ever-awesome snowfall sights here throughout the winters, but the best time to enjoy here is from March to November avoiding the spine chilling winters.
This whole hill station is an everlasting attraction in itself. But it is also full of other attractions like The War memorial at the parade ground, The Tip N Top view point, Kaleshwar Mahadev Temple, Santoshi Mata Temple, Regimental museum, St. Mary's Church and Lover's lane. Tourists can enjoy boating, paddling in the manmade lake named Bhulla Lake. Tourists also enjoy water activities at Kho River near Durga Devi Mandir located on the Kotdwar-Lansdowone Road. From a small distance from Lansdowne is Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple, BhairavGarhi Temple, Bhim Pakora. The old cemetry in the KItchner lines is the most mysterious and the most haunted place in Lansdowne. Graves of many war veterans has been laying here for more than 150 years.
