Badrinath is a divine and magnificent town and holds great significance for the Hindus as it is said to be the most important of the four holy Char Dham sites in India as well as in the Chota Char Dham of Uttarakhand. Badrinath got its name from the famous Badrinath Temple. Badrinath is situated in the Chamoli district of the Uttarakhand state of India.
Badrinath is situated at the bank of the river Alaknanda in the Garhwal Himalayas at an average elevation of more than 3,100 feet. The town of Badrinath lies between the magnificent peaks of Nar and Narayan ranging 9kms east of the Nilkantha Peak. In the 7th century, Adi Shankara re-established Badrinath as the major pilgrimage site. In earlier days, visiting the Holy temple wasn't easy, pilgrims had to walk hundreds of miles. In recent times the popularity of Badrinath has increased significantly with more than 6,00,000 pilgrims visiting each year. Badrinath also attracts adventure seeker, it is a gateway to many mountaineering expeditions headed to mountains like Nilkantha.
There are many legends associated with this place. Bhagwat Purana says, "There in Badrikashram the supreme being (Vishnu), in his incarnation as the sages Nara and Narayana, had been undergoing great penance since time immemorial for the welfare of all living entities." The name Badrinath came from two words Badri means 'berry' and nath means 'lord of'.
The Badrinath temple is the main attraction of the town. According to legend, Lord Shankar discovered a black stone image of Lord Badrinarayan made of Saligram stone in the Alaknanda River. He originally enshrined it in a cave near the Tapt Kund hot springs which was moved by the King of Garhwal at the 16th century to its present location. The magnificent temple is approximately 15m tall with a small cupola on top, mounted with a gold gilt roof. The architecture resembles a Buddhist temple, with the bright painted exterior also more typical of Buddhist temples. Just inside is the mandapa, a large pillared hall that leads to the main shrine area. The walls and pillars of mandapa are covered with detailed carvings.
