Kedarnath is a beautiful town situated in the Rudraprayag district of the Uttarakhand state of India. Kedarnath has gained national importance because of the Kedarnath temple, one of the most religious Hindu holy pilgrimage sites. Kedarnath is also one of the 4 Chota Char Dham and one of the twelve jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Located at an average elevation of more than 3,580 metres above sea level at the Garhwal Himalayas. Thousands of visitors get attracted towards the magnificent Kedarnath Temple covered between snow-capped peaks and the tranquility of this place. It was believed to be established by the Pandavas of the Mahabharata but the pemise was actually designed by the Adi Guru Shankaracharya in the 8th century A.D.
Kedarnath is named after the king kedar who ruled in "Satya Yuga". Kedarnath is said to be linked with many mythological incidents. According to legends, after the Kurukshetra war the Pandavas performed severe penance seeking the blessings of lord shiva. Knowing this lord shiva took the form of a bull and eluded them all the way to Kedarnath, Pandavas followed him, He dived into the ground and left his hump above on the surface. The remaining parts of Lord Shiva appeared in four different places the arms at tungnath, the face at Rudranath, the belly at madmaheshwar and the head at Kalpeshwar. These places are considered as the PanchKedar and worshipped as his manifestations.
During winters heavy snowfall hits kedarnath and no one stays there. So for 6 months Lord Kedarnath is transferred to a place called Ukimath near Guptakashi. On June 2013 kedarnath valley was struck by a massive landslide following by the enormous flash floods causing mass destruction. In the middle of pilgrimage season, landslides, heavy rainfall, cloud bursts and resulting flash floods nearly destroyed the town of Kedarnath. Thousands were killed and thousands went missing and although the adjacent area of the temple got destroyed the main part of the centuries old temple remain unharmed.
The Kedarnath temple itself is a prime shine of Kedarnath, there is also Bhairava Temple on the eastern side of the town, the deity of this place temple is Lord Bhairava. It is believed Lord Bhairava protects the town at the winter time. Charobari Tal is another place to visit which is a lake cum glacier. There is also a cliff near Kedarnath called the BhairavJhamp.
