Char Dham Yatra has a great significance among the Hindus. Char Dham as was described in the Mahabharata by the Pandavas as Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri the divine pilgrimage sites located at the state of Uttarakhand. According to the Hindu Legends, a journey to these religious sites in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand can cleanse one of all their sins and grants eternal salvation (Moksha). Every Hindu must visit these sites once during lifetime. Devotes and Saints have been visiting these religious shrines for thousands of years to feed their spiritual hunger and in search of the salvation and blessings of the Gods.
Until 1950s embarking on a journey to the char dham of Uttarakhand means only strenuous and lengthy walking trails in hilly area with an altitude repeatedly exceeding 4,000 meters. People like wandering hermits, religious professionals and those who could afford the travelling entourage were the regular pilgrims of the Char Dham. After the 1962 Indo-China war, India invested a great deal and money on road building and infrastructure to the border area improving the accessibility to the Char Dham to a great deal. Now pilgrims were able to travel to the nearest points to the shrines in cars, mini buses, this encouraged people with the middle income to initiate a tour of Char Dham.
Yamunotri is located at a height of 3293 meters above sea level, in the Garhwal Himalaya about 40 km away from Barkot. The Yamunotri temple lies in close proximity to the origin of the Yamuna River. Every year the temple opens for the devotees on the fortunate day of Akshaya Tritiya, which falls between the last week of April and the first week of May.
Gangotri temple holds a special significance to Hindus because it is the source of the Holy river Ganges. According to mythology, River Ganga touched the earth here for the first time as a result of King Bhagirath's severe penance. That's why, the river is also known as Bhagirathi at her source of origin.
Kedarnath temple is situated at an altitude of over 3500 meters on the banks of Mandakini river. It has the most importance of Lord Shiva's 12 Jyotirlingas. Astonishing snow flaked mountains all around, Kedarnath temple standing in the middle of the plateau gives a mesmerizing sight.
It is only one of the four shrines that is included in both "Char Dham of India" and the "Char Dham Yatra" of Uttarakhand. It was established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century.
